Internet Security and Health Services
E.Gonzalez MD FACS

Security in the Internet is the central column of all the possible services that can be offered. Health services can be modified tele-medicine changing to tele-health. This means not only transmission of simple data of vital signs or EKG information but the complete medical record, the x-rays, the images of any study, vital statistics, consults, prescriptions and therapies. The creation of secure sites can allow every person to have an E-record that he can access from anywhere with encrypted type of security and save billions of dollars in paperwork, energy and the repetition of any test. To repeat paperwork or to waste a little energy may not affect you that much but when you think about exposing yourself to unnecessary X rays, to blood test or any other invasive procedure because the information is not available then you say, there must be a better way. The health industry will move completely into the Internet when safety is achieved.

The hospitals, insurance companies, government can create their own e-files or can rely on an independent institution or company of trust that can provide each person with this service. The information can be transferred easily anywhere after authorization by the patient. Surely every institution will want to have their own e-file but that will not enable the patient to move his information to any place at any time and that in occasions can be life saving. Today the security of the medical record is poor in most hospitals because it can be read by any person that can access the nurse station. Those can be employees of the hospital, independent contract workers that have to enter the area, insurance company representatives that access the record to protect their assets. This is a simple well known example that has not been corrected and many other examples from e-commerce and scandals of agencies that information is altered, lost or stolen.

Instant transmission of information to the physician of tests performed that can include images is done today without security. Adding security will increase the value and trust of this information as well as any other document transmitted securely. A prescription can be sent to a the pharmacy and be ready when the patient gets there. To achieve this every professional has to be trained. The government and institutions have to update their computer systems and each of us needs to have his digital certificate X.509 so that a Public Key Infrastructure, known as PKI, can be implemented worldwide. With the combination of these transmission of information from doctor to patient, patient to pharmacy or doctor to pharmacy is secure, unchallenged, authentic, unaltered since created and non-repudiated. The final touch that will create a Tsunami of physicians and other health professionals along with the big health industries will be mobility. A hand held device that ideally can be a phone type that will allow communication and transmission of information with the security just described.
